Good to Great
-- stars!
by Jim Collins
Why Some Companies Make the Leap...and Others Don't
The coauthor of the bestselling "Built to Last" now presents a blueprint for transforming good companies into great ones. Charts & graphs throughout
The Challenge
"Built to Last," the defining management study of the nineties, showed how great companies triumph over time and how long-term sustained performance can be engineered into the DNA of an enterprise from the verybeginning.
But what about the company that is not born with great DNA? How can good companies, mediocre companies, even bad companies achieve enduring greatness?
The Study
For years, this question preyed on the mind of Jim Collins. Are there companies that defy gravity and convert long-term mediocrity or worse into long-term superiority? And if so, what are the universal distinguishing characteristics that cause a company to go from good to great?
The Standards
Using tough benchmarks, Collins and his research team identified a set of elite companies that made the leap to great results and sustained those results for at least fifteen years. How great? After the leap, the good-to-great companies generated cumulative stock returns that beat the general stock market by an average of seven times in fifteen years, better than twice the results delivered by a composite index of the world's greatest companies, including Coca-Cola, Intel, General Electric, and Merck.
The Comparisons
The research team contrasted the good-to-great companies with a carefully selected set of comparison companies that failed to make the leap from good to great. What was different? Why did one set of companies become truly great performers while the other set remained only good?
Over five years, the team analyzed the histories of all twenty-eight companies in the study. After sifting through mountains of data and thousands of pages of interviews, Collins and hiscrew discovered the key determinants of greatness -- why some companies make the leap and others don't.
The Findings
The findings of the Good to Great study will surprise many readers and shed light on virtually every area of management strategy and practice. The findings include:
|
“ Some of the key concepts discerned in the study, ” comments Jim Collins, "fly in the face of our modern business culture and will, quite frankly, upset some people.” Perhaps, but who can afford to ignore these findings? |
Harmonic Wealth

by James Ray
The Secret of Attracting the Life You Want
Identifying the five 'pillars' of our everyday existence - financial, relational, intellectual, physical and spiritual - James Arthur Ray shows us how to define what we want in life and then presents the strategy for becoming absolutely unstoppable in achieving those things. Turning theory into practice, James Ray distils extensive study of ancient wisdom traditions and cutting-edge findings in scientific fields into proven action steps that are practical and easy to implement. Make Money Be Happy
3 stars!
by Carmel Mcconnell
How to Make All the Money You Want, Doing What You Want to Do
Do you think you have enough money? Do you feel really fulfilled by your career? Very few people can answer yes to both questions. Some of us can say yes to one or the other. But the majority of people would actually say no to both. So what is it that is stopping you achieving your full financial & career potential? Is it possible that taking steps to be fulfilled can actually be the same steps you need to take to get control of your financial situation (and vice versa). It runs completely contrary to what we've been led to believe - you can have lots of cash or a fulfilling job, but you can't have both. Unless you are one of those annoyingly rare people who turn their hobby into their job (and we've all read enough about those). Make Money, Be Happy shows that a career is just one income stream, and that many others exist. It offers the reader a different life perspective, one that integrates career ambition with greater personal financial control. It blasts financial fear and stupidity and attempts to replace it with knowledge and the desire for personal financial action (in order to do the things you love). The book provides lots of examples and basic finance tools and techniques to help you, the reader figure out *Why you earn what you earn *What you might really want to do with your life *What your career choices will mean, financially *What is the business case for you, right now, where you are *The concept of day rate versus salary *What is good to understand about investments *Self destructive spending habits *Ways to make a low income work harder *Ways to make a high income feel like one This book explains simple concepts buried underneath the jargon of financial management. The author digs so the reader doesn't have to

Success Intelligence

by Robert Holden
Timeless Wisdom for a Manic Society
What is success? We're so busy chasing it that we've lost sight of what it actually means to us. With today's ever-accelerating pace, the expectation of delivering more, faster, has become the norm and we've begun to equate success with busyness. But does busyness really make us successful? More importantly, does it make us happy? Top corporate speaker and founder of the Happiness Project, Robert Holden, explains that while our permanent busyness may look like success, it doesn't deliver results. It blocks our vision and we lose sight of what is important in work, relationships and life. Robert shows us how to side-step the fast lane and take a broader perspective. By giving ourselves space to find out the reasons for our busyness, we can stop and consider what it is we really want in life - and make it happen. Written in thematic chapters that move us effectively towards our new life direction, this highly motivational book is full of entertaining stories, wise principles, practical exercises and winning formulas to get us the success and happiness we want, without the struggle and stress that holds us back.

Every new project (or career or relationship) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point - really hard, really not fun. At this point you might be in a Dip, which will get better if you keep pushing, or a Cul-de-Sac, which will never get better no matter how hard you try. The hard part is knowing the difference and acting on it. According to marketing guru and best-selling author Seth Godin, what sets successful entrepreneurs (and pop stars and weight lifters and car salesmen) apart from everyone else is their ability to give up on Cul-de-Sacs while staying motivated in Dips. Winners quit fast, quit often and quit without guilt - until they commit to beating the right Dip for the right reasons. You'll never be number one at anything without picking your shots very carefully. The Dip is a short, entertaining book that helps you do just that. It will forever alter the way you think about success.

This work provides a 12-week course that guides the reader through the process of recovering their creative self. It aims to dispel the "I'm not talented enough" conditioning that tends to hamper the creativity of many people.
She recommends two ongoing activities that will conquer blocks and self-destructive tendencies: morning pages and artist's dates. Morning pages are three pages of writing, performed daily, about anything at all. This exercise overcomes the writer's internal censor and makes writing habitual, she claims. The artist's date is a weekly block of two hours spent observing, experiencing, and sensing.
The Dark Side of the Light Chasers: Reclaiming Your Power, Creativity, Brilliance, and Dreams
5 stars!
by Debbie Ford
In this enlightening guide, Debbie Ford explains that the dark side of our personality should not be hidden. By denying our dark side, we reject these aspects of our true natures rather than giving ourselves the freedom to live authentically. Here she shows that it is possible to acknowledge and accept our so-called weaknesses, proving that these qualities may be important, hidden strengths. For example, perhaps some 'selfishness' can save us from exhaustion and resentment. Full of illuminating stories and practical exercises, Debbie Ford shows us how to reconcile our darker impulses and find the gifts they offer. Your life will be transformed when you unconceal, own, and embrace your shadow.

Travelling At The Speed Of Love
3 stars!
by Sonia Choquette
When we travel at the speed of love, we choose to live in a frequency of unconditional love. Today, most of us travel at the frequency of fear and live with a victim consciousness
When we’re traveling at the fear frequency, no matter how fast we go, we can never get to our destination. The victim consciousness is based on the premise: “I have no choice.” Traveling at the speed of love means taking our power back.
We’re actually in a different universe when we travel at the speed of love. Our world is not a menacing, threatening race geared to cheat death. It becomes, at any moment, so satisfying that if this were our last moment on Earth, that would be okay.
Wisdom Of The Ages
3 stars!
by Dr Wayne Dyer
A Modern Master Brings Eternal Truths Into Everyday Life
In this inspiring new book, Wisdom of the Ages, bestselling author Dr. Wayne W. Dyer poses the question:
“What do our ancestral scholars, whom we consider the wisest and most spiritually advanced, have to say to us today?” The answer lies in this powerful collection of writings, poems, and sayings by some of the greatest thinkers of the past twenty-five centuries. In succinct original essays, Dyer sets out to explain the meaning and context of each piece of wisdom, and, most important, to explain how we can actively apply these teachings to our modern lives. From sixty ancestral masters – Buddha, Michelangelo, Rumi, Whitman, Jesus, Emily Dickinson, and Emerson, among others – here are treasured passages on a variety of subjects, including solitude, time, and passion. Among the contributions are words on inspiration from Pantanjali (c. 1st to 3rd century B.C.), author of the Hindu classic, Yoga Sutras; teaching about the power of the prayer from 13-century monk St. Francis of Assisi; and thoughts about the importance of action written by Mother Teresa. The voices collected here cut across a wide range of historical eras and cultures, yet they communicate universal truths about the human experience. Wisdom of the Ages provides us with a marvelous dual opportunity: to receive guidance from our great ancestors and to recognize our own potential for greatness.

Communion With God
4 stars!
by Neale Donald Walsch
Now in paperback, the bestselling author of "Conversations with God" shows readers the path to their own unique relationship with God. In this blueprint for seekers, Walsch reveals The Ten Illusions of Man--the misconceptions we hold about ourselves, our world, and our God.
A stand-alone title to complement Walsch's bestselling Conversations with God series, this too-general spirituality manifesto borrows from most major religions while chastising all of them for their judgmentalism, with Christianity getting the harshest treatment. Walsch continues his tradition of writing in the first person as God, but this time there is no human counterbalance, making this no longer a conversation so much as a prophetic indictment. He begins by describing the "ten illusions of man" that have been perpetuated in unhelpful "cultural stories"Äi.e., Biblical storiesÄand then helps readers understand and use these illusions in an effort to make their own realities. Walsch reassures readers that such things as failure, requirement and ignorance do not actually exist, but are among the ten illusions. We are part of God, he explains, and since God is perfect, so are we. Walsch seems to believe that his ideas are groundbreaking, but they are garden-variety New Thought concepts adapted for a therapeutic age. His once-innovative technique of writing in the voice of God has also lost its luster; God's prose is having an off day, as evidenced by Walsh's predilection for sentence fragments and stream-of-consciousness thought patterns. A superior work in general spirituality is Andrew Harvey's The Direct Path: Creating a Journey to the Divine Using the World's Mystical Traditions, which is in harmony with Walsch's declaration that "all paths lead to God" but offers outstanding writing and a more humble tone.
